The S Dor variable R71 of the LMC was found to be an IRAS-point source. Its flux densities at 12, 25, and 60 μm are explained to be due to the radiation of an extended (d ≈ 8000 stellar radii) dust envelope of very low temperature (Tdust ≈ 140K). The total amount of matter (i.e. gas and dust) of the envelope is estimated to M ≈ 3×10-2M_sun;. About this mass has been ejected within the kinematic age (tkin ≈ 500 yr) of the extended dust envelope if the previously derived mass loss rate (M ≈ 5×10-5M_sun;yr-1) of R71 is adopted.
