Very Large Telescopes: Mirrors

The Gemini project comprises two telescopes with an aperture of 8 m and a focal length of 128 m, both located at optimum sites in the Earth's northern and southern hemispheres. The author reports on a unit for the function of these telescopes, the Gemini Acquisition and Guiding unit (GAG). It combines optical, mechanical and electronic modules positioned in the immediate vicinity of the telescope's focal plane.
