Despite three decades of observations, there still exists no convincing unique modelling for the wide band spectrum (0.1-200 keV) of accreting X-ray binary pulsars. BeppoSAX, with its broad band coverage and good energy resolution, is providing new insights on these complex spectra, revealing all the different components that contribute to the shape of the continuum (e.g. soft excess, power law, exponential cut-off) against which emission (e.g. iron L and K line) or absorption (cyclotron resonance scattering line) structures must be resolved. In this paper we review the BeppoSAX results on some of the sources of this class and in particular we discuss: the evidence for a harder component necessary to explain the spectrum above the cyclotron line feature; the presence and shape of the cyclotron feature and its second harmonic; the evolution with the phase of the pulse of both continuum and lines. Implications on the current modelling of accreting pulsars are also discussed.
