The seasonal dependence of Mayaud's geomagnetic-activity index aa is examined for times of minimum of even- and odd-numbered 11-yr solar activity cycles from 1868 to 1976. At even minima, aa peaks in March and September and is smallest in June and December; at odd minima its behavior is less regular. For 1954, 1965, and 1976 the variation of aa conforms to the sector structure of the interplanetary magnetic field. This effect results from the motion of the earth through the interplanetary field, an extension of the solar field which similarly varies with a period of about 22 yr.
