The AGILE gamma -ray observatory sensitive in the 30 MeV -- 50 GeV range will be ideal to monitor AGNs and other galaxies because of its large field of view ( ~ 2 sr) and sensitivity. The AGILE pointing and data processing program allows to simultaneously monitor several AGNs and to react quickly with multiwavelength observations in the case of flaring activity. The large cumulative sky coverage reached at the end of a 2-year program is expected to lead to a significant increase in the number of AGNs detected in the gamma -ray band.
