A quasi-linear equation is obtained for an inhomogeneous plasma of
finite pressure and is applied to the study of geomagnetic pulsations
excited in energetic ring-current plasma. Theoretical results on Alfven
wave instability agree well with satellite data on magnetospheric
pulsations of Pc4,5 type.
