The adequacy of the model proposed by Ivanov-Kholodnyi and Mikhailov (1977) for the near-noon midlatitude F2-region is evaluated for a wide range of solar and terrestrial conditions. The model takes account of three basic processes: photoionization by short wave solar radiation, vertical plasma transport due to ambipolar diffusion, and vertical drift and recombination of plasma. The proposed model is found to be valid for real ionospheric conditions at high levels of solar activity and capable of serving as the basis of large general schemes for calculating the parameters of the F2-region.
