The depolarizing properties of magnetically active media are considered. It is shown that Faraday depolarization cannot prevent the emission of linearly polarized radiation from the photosphere of a magnetic white dwarf if the surface magnetic-field strength is of the order of 100 MG. In this case the optical radiation from the photosphere would exhibit appreciable circular and linear polarization of the same order of magnitude. Some general polarization effects that occur during propagation of polarized radiation in an arbitrary magnetically active medium are examined which must be taken into account when interpreting polarimetric observations of both white dwarfs and other astrophysical objects with strong magnetic fields.
