A model is proposed whereby the Gamma Cyg nebula is the result of a collision between a nonradiating gas, swept up by an expanding supernova remnant, and a dense interstellar cloud. In this model, the collision produces a bow shock in the swept-up gas, and hard radiation from the bow shock heats and ionizes the cloud. This situation is shown to resemble the excitation of an H II region, but with the bow shock playing the role of an exciting star. With this model, the high H-alpha luminosity of the Gamma Cyg nebula can be brought into agreement with the observed low gas velocities.
