Starting with the equation of transfer in a plane-parallel inhomogeneous atmosphere which emits and scatters radiation anisotropically, we obtain a set of functional equations which govern the relations between the internal and external (emergent) intensities. Since the functional equations are generalizations of the principles of invariance of Chandrasekhar, the latter can be reduced from the former as a special case. Some applications of the functional equations are outlined.
