It is suggested that the nucleus of quasars and radio galaxies contains a powerful high-energy gamma-ray source. The emitted gamma rays, assumed to be collimated, interact with the ambient photon field creating electron pairs. Such a process provides for efficient transport of energy from the nucleus to the compact as well as to the extended radio components. In this context, the unidentified galactic gamma-ray sources may represent miniature models of the energy sources of quasars and radio galaxies.
