Could Bernard Lyot have imagined the protean forms in which his most notable invention, the coronagraph, would appear 75 years later? Could he have foreseen that the most widely used solar coronagraphs would be based in space, or that coronagraphs would seek to image planets and disks around other stars? Perhaps so - he was far more than a builder of creative instruments. I will discuss advances in solar coronagraphy since Lyot's time, in both the science that drives the observations and the technology that sustains them.
