The thermodynamics of black holes are discussed, considering its implications for the interconnection of gravitation, thermodynamics and quantum theory. The question of the function to be identified with the entropy of a black hole is examined in light of the principle that black holes have no hair and the irreversibility of black hole processes, and a generalized second law of thermodynamics including the effects of black hole entropy is presented. The thermal radiance of black holes is then discussed, noting its quantum nature, the implications for black hole temperature and the role of the horizon in the generation of thermal radiation. The results of statistical black hole physics in the area of stimulated emission from black holes (superradiance) are indicated, and the relationship of black hole entropy to the number of possible interior configurations is considered.
