A theoretical analysis shows that photoelectron trapping by the nonuniform geomagnetic field produces a two- to four-fold increase of thermal-plasma heating inside the plasmaphere and a six- to seven-fold increase beyond the plasmapause. Various methods, available in the literature, on the heating of the plasmasphere by photoelectrons are reviewed and compared. The influence of different geomagnetic flux tubes on the heating of thermal plasma is investigated.
