The main work of the BAA Solar Section is to observe and record solar activity in white light by noting the number of sunspots and sunspot groups on the solar disk on any given day. However due to modern technology, members are able to record data in a variety of ways. Several members observe solar prominences, filaments, plages and flares in H-alpha and digitally record their observations, submitting some truly stunning images. Occasionally something special happens and in recent years we have been spoiled with major events such as the transits of Mercury and Venus, an annular eclipse visible from Spain and of course the recent total eclipse visible from North Africa and the eastern Mediterranean.
