Since 2000, the Solar Submillimeter Telescope (SST) has provided systematic observations of solar flares in the 200-400 GHz (sub-THz) domain. The Köln Observatory for Submillimeter and Millimeter Astronomy (KOSMA) telescope has also detected a few events in a similar frequency range during short observing campaigns in 2001 and 2003. Several events show a new spectral component with a positive slope at the highest observing frequencies during both their impulsive and gradual phases. Here we give a short overview of the radio data and place them in the context of measurements obtained in the hard X-rays/gamma-rays, UV and optical domains. We critically assess the proposed explanations for the sub-THz component. We show that these data contain important clues to particle acceleration and energy transport during flares, but most theoretical issues remain open. Measurements in the far infrared range are needed to complete our picture of these sub-THz events. We briefly review the prospects to perform such observations during this solar cycle and further.
