The acceleration of intergalactic dust grains to suprathermal and relativistic energies is examined as a possible explanation for the high-energy cosmic ray spectrum. It is shown that charged dust grains of radii 3 x 10 to the -6th cm may acquire suprathermal energies by the Fermi mechanism, and account for the sharp change in the cosmic ray spectral index observed above energies of 10 to the 15th eV and the bump observed near 10 to the 14th to 10 to the 15th eV. It is also proposed that some of these suprathermal grains may be further accelerated by the Alfven magnetic pumping process to relativistic energies and thus account for the primary cosmic rays of extensive air showers.
