We have analyzed the H-R diagrams of 17 selected open clusters within ∼2 kpc from the Sun. By fitting the observed diagrams with theoretical isochrones we have estimated the chemical abundance of each cluster. We find that there is a systematic variation of the metal content with the galactic radius which can be expressed as
Δlog(Z/X)/ΔR = -0.098±0.015 kpc-1.
The average metal abundance in the solar neighbourhood is =0.025±0.003 which corresponds to ¯Z=0.018±0.002. Also, we find that the mean abundance of helium is ¯Y=0.267±0.013 by mass or =0.093±0.05 by number. Moreover we determine that a possible gradient of the He abundance must be limited to ΔY/ΔR≦0.012 kpc-1.
