Various possible interpretations of the origin and stability of the low surface brightness knot structures observed in 3C310 and 3C326 are analyzed. It is shown that large scale turbulence, gravitationally bound systems, thermally confined knots, and knot formation through instabilities are not responsible. A plausible model is that several small ram pressure confined knots are ejected from the nucleus or the beam in a relatively non-collimated manner. These supersonically moving knots generate shock waves which can account for the necessary in situ acceleration in the inter-knot medium of the relaxed lobes. More specifically the model can account for the observed spectral characteristics of the individual lobes.
