L(alpha) images of comet West taken on March 5, 1976 are analyzed with a hydrogen model. In contrast to the success of the model in reproducing L (alpha) images of comet Kohoutek, agreement was not found for comet West. The most likely source of the discrepancies is irregular gas production in comet West. An atomic hydrogen production rate of 3.6 x 10 to the 30th atoms/s is derived for the region (up-sun) least affected by chaotic gas production. The Gaussian-like velocity distribution expected from photodissociation of water does not agree with the observations of either comet West or Kohoutek.
