Scientific paper

It is demonstrated how empirically established data on white dwarfs - mass distribution, median mass, population characteristics, and the ratio of white dwarf to supernova birth rates - provide constraints for models of galactic evolution. Results are given for 60 different combinations of the parameters: initial mass function, time dependence of star formation and relation between initial and final star masses. Statistical data on masses and numbers of degenerate stars and the mass returned to the interstellar medium are given for a subset of galactic evolution models compatible with white dwarf data.
