The broadening and shift of the 6162, 6122, 6102 Å lines (multiplet 3) of neutral calcium have been measured when the lines were formed in absorption in a carbon-tube furnace at 2000 K under pressures of helium, neon, and argon up to 700 Torr. Both broadening and shift were found to vary linearly with perturbing gas density as predicted by the "impact theory" of collisional broadening. For a given perturbing gas no significant differences in behaviour between the three lines were found but different gases produced widely different broadening and shift. These differences can be explained if the interaction potential between radiating and perturbing atoms is assumed to have both attractive and repulsive parts. The results are compatible with the predictions of the semi-classical "impact theory" calculated for 6-8-12 potentials. This interpretation permits a prediction, based on the measured broadening produced by helium, of the broadening likely to be produced by atomic hydrogen perturbers at temperatures typical of stellar photospheres. The predicted broadening is in reasonable agreement with the broadening parameter deduced from the profile of the 6162 Å line in the solar spectrum.
