The heliospheric 'space weather' at the beginning of cycle 24 reflects the particular solar conditions characteristic of, though not necessarily unique to this cycle. These include Interplanetary CME ejecta (clouds) whose source regions are influenced by the Northern hemisphere preference in active region emergence and the existence of complex coronal streamer and coronal hole structures. We consider the connection of recent periods of major disturbances observed at 1 AU with what is happening in the photospheric fields at the time. The appearance of major (e.g. fast, wide) CMEs in early 2010 may be influenced by the onset of the warped coronal streamer belt geometry. The streamer belt is especially sensitive to the higher order harmonics of the photospheric field this cycle because of the weak polar dipole component. Ironically, the current weak polar fields may enable the CME rate to remain comparable to the rates during the two previous stronger field cycles by enabling more modest active regions to have greater coronal influence.
