Mirrors: Coatings

Scientific paper

Telescope mirrors used for astronomical observations require high reflectivity for a long period of time, and hence need to be re-coated regularly. The authors report the structure and the function of a mid-size 1.6 m vacuum chamber for evaporation coating, newly installed at the first floor of the Advanced Technology Center in the Mitaka Campus of the National Astronomical Observatory. The primary function of this coating chamber is the re-coating of the reflectors of the Infrared Simulator and other telescopes. It also serves as a prototype model for the giant chamber for the 8.3 m main reflector of the Subaru Telescope which is under construction at the top of Mauna Kea in Hawaii.
