The upper mesosphere and lower thermosphere (80-200 km) is rich in chemistry involving dissociated molecular products (O and N) which lead to a plethora of chemical reactions that modify composition. Temperature measurements are vital for characterizing chemical reaction rates, for quantifying the transport of constituents through diffusion and other processes, and for identifying convective and shear instabilities and their influence on turbulent mixing. The region below 110 km is rich in emissions from which rotational temperatures are made. Active sensing with lidar is also used, both Rayleigh (<85 km) and resonance fluorescence techniques (80-110 km). These methods will be summarized, as well as their contributions to current understanding of temperature. The 110-200 km altitude region is virtually void of measurements, but new methods will be described which can be used to probe the temperature structure of this region. Simulations using large power aperture Rayleigh lidars (~10,000 Wm^2) will be shown to illustrate the future potential for measurements of this largely unexplored region.
