Since September 2009, OH airglow imager observation have been conducted at the Andes Lidar Observatory (ALO), Cerro Pachón, Chile (30°S, 71°W). Two years of observation provide great opportunity to investigate mesospheric gravity waves over midlatitude mountainous region in the Southern Hemisphere. Characteristics of quasi-monochromatic gravity waves are deduced using spectral analysis. Strong seasonal variation in wave propagation direction is observed. Momentum fluxes from quasi-monochromatic (QM) gravity waves are inferred using intrinsic parameters assuming climatology of temperature profiles. These results are compared with those from 5-year (2002-2007) data from Maui, Hawaii (21°N, 156°W). On the one hand, common features such as the abundance of short horizontal-scale waves and tidal modulation of wave momentum fluxes are present in both sites. On the other hand, significant geographical variations in wave horizontal wavelength distribution, occurrence frequency, and predominant propagation directions are observed. Other than statistics of QM gravity waves, several interesting features are noticed for nights without QM waves. For example, when large wind shears occurred in the OH airglow layer, short-lived, deformed wave fronts perturbed the OH emission significantly, but they are difficult to be resolved by spectral analysis due to their turbulent features. Occasionally, quasi-stationary wave fronts were spotted during austral summer, possibly mountain waves. A large amplitude event was observed in July 2010. The relationships between these wave characteristics and wind field in the Mesopause region are investigated with meteor radar wind measurements.
