The analysis of Martian soils for traces of NO3(-) and NH4(+) in future missions will supply important information on the N abundance of Mars, its past climate, and its potential for the evolution of life. An effort is presently made to determine whether the latter compound, bound to clays, can be detected by means of a combination of differential thermal analysis and gas chromatography; this possibility receives substantial support from the results obtained.
