The ATCA pilot survey of a 250 sq.deg region at the head of the Magellanic Stream has greatly increased our knowledge of its structure at high spatial resolution. Currently undergoing analysis, the data shows compact clouds, filaments and webs of gas down to resolutions unattainable with previous Parkes observations. The structure of one such filament is suggestive of the presence of HI self-absorption implying that cool HI is present and points to the amazing possibility of in-situ star-formation in the Stream! We therefore propose to observe background radio continuum sources in this, and other, promising sightlines to test for the presence of such cool gas.
