Advancements in the understanding of impact phenomena have led to the hypothesis that the formation of the moon was due to the collision of a MArs-dimensioned body with the Earth; the moon was thus formed from the impactor's mass and the Earth's mantle. The possibility that the earth has been formed in the early history of the Earth, and at that stage possessed a composition different from the upper mantle, offers an alternative explanation.
