Evidence is emerging that the nature of the intergalactic medium in compact groups (CGs) of galaxies does not only depend on the mass of the galaxies in the group, but in addition on its merging history. The Southern Compact Groups (SCGs) sample is the best-defined sample to study these effects, because - having been selected on a computational basis - it does not have the biases of previous, visually selected samples. It contains CGs covering a much wider range of physical parameters, allowing us to study the influence of interactions and mergers on the member galaxies and the intergalactic medium in a broader context. We propose here to observe with the ATCA the HI gas in 10 well-selected SCGs as a tracer of the distribution and kinematics of neutral gas in the member galaxies and intergalactic space. Together with optical and X-ray observations, this will tell us how interactions and mergers influence the intergalactic gas and thereby group evolution.
