We request LBA time to obtain multi-epoch high resolution, wide field, sensitive imaging observations at 2.3 GHz of compact radio sources in the nearby starburst galaxies NGC 253 and NGC 4945. We will search for new supernova remnants and monitor the structure and evolution of existing remnants to improve current estimates of the supernova rate and star formation rate in the nuclear region. The sensitivity and resolution provided by these observations will enable us to estimate and determine both upper and lower limits on these rates using a number of independent methods. From models we have generated to estimate the supernova rate and star formation rate in the NGC 253 starburst, it is clear that frequent, high sensitivity monitoring is required to maximise the chances of detecting remnants whose light curves peak briefly above the detection limits of VLBI images. We have determined that the LBA is an effective instrument for achieving this with galaxies such as NGC 253 and NGC 4945.
