Previous bulk analyses of carbonate in the SNC meteorite ALH84001 have demonstrated ranges of 10's of permil in both C and O isotope ratios. The authors have attempted to constrain the source of these variations by ion microprobe analysis of the O-18/O-16 and C-13/C-12 ratios in the 20-30 micron diameter spots of the carbonate and coexisting silicate phases. The methods and standardization of the analysis of carbonates are described here.
