Most models for the composition of the Martian mantle and core are dependent on knowledge of the moment of inertia factor of the planet. A lower inertia value implies a lower abundance of Fe in the Martian mantle and less S in the core, or a thicker crust. Attention is presently given to the Dreibus and Wanke (1985) geochemical model, whose mantle and core composition are derived independently of assumptions about the moment of inertia factor.
