Theoretical models of the X-ray spectra emitted by hot astrophysical plasmas have been calculated by many authors over the past 3 decades. In that time the computer power available and the quality of the atomic data that go into the calculations have improved enormously. This overview summarizes the development of model codes, the philosophies behind them, the directions they have taken, and some of the likely future developments.
