The development of a star from a cloud of gas is followed. The evolution of the protostar is described, and its luminosity is accounted for by the shock front created by accreting gas. The results of deuterium fusion are described, and the role of stellar wind in dispersing the gas surrounding the eventual main sequence star is pointed out. The formation of circumstellar disks which may evolve into planets is explained.
