The paper discusses the characteristics of recently-discovered oscillation modes in the sun that are phase-coherent for up to 1 yr, with surface velocity amplitudes as low as 2 mm/sec. Particular attention is given to the properties of p-modes and f-modes of the small-amplitude oscillations, for which there is clear and abundant observational data. Some properties of the solar interior are inferred from the comparison of p-mode frequencies with solar model calculations.
