An infrared spectrum of Comet Levy was obtained on August 27, 1990 when the comet was 1.4 AU from the sun. In addition to the broad emission feature at 3.4 microns seen in a number of comets, the spectrum clearly shows emission at 3.28 microns which is stronger, relative to the 3.4-micron feature, than in any other comet yet observed. The ratio of emission in the 3.4-micron band to the rate of water production is the lowest yet observed in a comet and is consistent with the tendency for the ratio to decrease with increasing heliocentric distance.
