We present high resolution observations full width at half maximum ((FWHM) = 11 km/s) in the lithium region of the faint (V = 16.1) turnoff star N. 4062 in the old globular cluster NGC 6397. An absorption feature corresponding to the Li 6707.8 A line is detected with an equivalent width of 30 +/- 8 mA. The effective temperature of N. 4062 is 6150 +/- 150 K and we derive a lithium abundance of 2.35 +/- 0.25. The presence of lithium in a turnoff star of the approximately = 14 Gyr old globular cluster NGC 6397 removes the age uncertainty of the field population and strongly supports the cosmological significance of the lithium abundance, leaving no alternative source. The abundance is slightly greater than the Li plateau found in field population II stars, but the two values are consistent within the errors and they suggest that both globular clusters stars and old field population share the same lithium abundance.
