Observations (Blandford et al 1977, Cohen et al 1977) of distant
galaxies which have apparent velocities of separation greater than 2c
are considered. It is shown that such velocities can be observed within
the framework of the general theory of relativity, and need not imply
physical velocities greater than that of light.
