The present study examines the accuracy of the approximate replacement of the frequency mean J-bar(tau) of the total intensity Jv(tau) by Jc + a(J0/tau/-Jc) by Geovenelli, where Jc is the total intensity at the continuum, J0(tau) is that at the line center and a is independent of depth. Numerical calculations for strong solar lines show very high values of the residual intensities. A slight change in the aproximation is proposed to obtain a result quite consistent with observational and existing calculated data.
