A nuclear explosion could be the best option for deflecting an asteroid headed for Earth, according to a NASA report to the U.S. Congress that was released on 9 March. Other options could be used, particularly in the case of a small, solid body, but the report notes that 30-80% of potentially hazardous near-Earth objects are in orbits that cannot be reached by current or planned launch systems. The report also finds that in order for NASA to reach its congressionally mandated goal of finding 90% of all potentially hazardous near-Earth objects by 2020, the agency will need to partner with other government agencies on future ground-based observatories and that one observatory will need to be dedicated to the discovery of these objects.
