The stellar kinematics of the M87 core are studied with high-resolution measurements, taken at several position angles and with a high signal-to-noise ratio, and are compared to the observations of Dressler and Richstone (1990). An area around the nucleus is found to be blue-shifted and have a velocity that is about equal to 40 km/s with respect to the body of M87. Other spectral parameters indicate that the core of this galaxy is not in complete dynamical equilibrium, and the notion is presented that the measurements are indicative of a second galaxy merging with M87.
