A rare instance of star formation is reported in the vicinity of the young H II region IC 4628 in a small compact globule which has a comet-like appearance resembling the cometary globules found in the Gum Nebula. It is suggested that the star-like object found embedded in the head of the cometary globule is a premain-sequence star formed in situ as a result of the impact of a shock or ionization front associated with the H II region IC 4628. The IRAS point source 16509-4049 appears to be associated with the dense core of this globule.
