SAX is an Italian X-ray satellite with a Dutch contribution which will be launched in April 1996 into a circular nearly equatorial orbit at 600 km. The two identical X-ray wide field cameras (WFCs) for SAX are provided by SRON and are based on the coded mask principle. They operate in the energy range between 1.8 and 30 keV with an energy resolution of 20% at 6 keV. The field of view of each WFC is 20×20 degrees square FWHM, the angular position resolution is 5 arcmin while the source location accuracy is better than 1 arcmin. The sensitivity is better than a few milli Crabs in 104s. The WFCs can perform spatially resolved simultaneous monitoring of compact X-ray sources in crowded fields with high resolution. The scientific aims of the WFCs can be summarised as follows: perform systematic spectral variability studies of different types of compact X-ray sources over a large range of timescales and study characteristics of (recurrent) X-ray transients.
