The RIXOS sample of objects is a large, nearly complete X-ray survey of objects detected serendipitously in PSPC fields, and as such provides an unparalleled opportunity to study the X-ray emission across a wide range of sources. The authors present a preliminary analysis of the X-ray spectral properties of the RIXOS sample based on three colour data. For the AGN they find an average energy index of 1.05±0.10 with no evidence for spectral evolution, implying on average no significant steepening of the spectrum at softer energies. However, some individual objects do show evidence for a soft excess, and the authors also find evidence for intrinsic absorption. Approximately 20% of their AGN show such features. Narrow emission line galaxies (NELGs) seem to fit a power-law spectrum, as do most clusters. For the clusters this implies a high bremsstrahlung temperature >3 keV. The stars are shown to deviate strongly from a power-law model. These results show a that simple three colour technique is a powerful tool in studying X-ray selected samples.
