The authors report deep (≡42 μJy rms) radio observations of the Marano field, which has previously been observed also with ROSAT. The radio observations were carried out at 1.370 and 2.378 GHz with the Australia Telescope Compact Array. The authors detected 80 and 45 sources respectively at 1.370 and 2.378 GHz (most of these detected also at 1.370 GHz) above the 5.5σlocal level in an area of ≡0.34 sq.deg. In the inner, most sensitive part of the ROSAT image (18 arcmin radius from the field center), 58 X-ray sources have been detected with S(0.5-2 keV) > 4×10-15erg cm-2s-1. From a cross-correlation of the X-ray and radio (1.370 GHz) catalogues it is found that (8.6±3.9)% of the X-ray population at low flux levels exhibits radio emission at >210 μJy.
