Clusters Of Galaxies: X-Ray Surveys

Scientific paper

The authors present an update on recent progress on the ROSAT Deep Cluster Survey (RDCS). The aim of this project is to compile the largest and deepest X-ray selected cluster sample from a serendipitous search in ROSAT-PSPC deep pointed observations by utilizing a wavelet-based detection algorithm. A large optical identification program for a sample of ≡90 cluster candidates is underway and has resulted so far in the discovery of 38 new galaxy clusters/groups. The authors present preliminary results on the redshift distribution of the RDCS sample. They also discuss how selection and instrumental effects, as well as uncertainties in the local X-ray luminosity function, have to be carefully accounted for in the analysis of deep samples in order to establish the presence and the nature of cluster evolution.
