X-Ray Background: Active Galactic Nuclei

Scientific paper

The cosmic X-ray background (XRB) is now widely believed to originate in active galactic nuclei (AGN). The question the author addresses in this work is whether a specific subgroup of AGN can be singled out as contributing the dominant part, either in luminosity function (is the XRB dominated by relatively few very bright objects, or by a large number of faint ones?), in redshift (which redshift range dominates the observed XRB?), in observed properties (radio loudness, variability, spectral index, emission lines), or in object types (quasars, Seyfert 1 or 2 galaxies, starburst galaxies). For objects with a relatively well known X-ray luminosity function, this is easy to answer - for example in the case of quasars and Seyfert galaxies most of the XRB is contributed by medium luminosity objects, near the "knee" in the luminosity function. This result depends on the evolution of the luminosity function. It is more difficult to estimate the partial contribution of other subgroups, for which there is little explicit knowledge of the luminosity function.
