The jet of the giant elliptical galaxy M87 is one of the few objects of its kind allowing detailed morphological studies from radio wavelengths up to the X-ray regime. While the synchrotron nature of its radio to optical continuum is established, it is still unclear what causes the X-ray emission. The authors discuss this question by comparing ROSAT-HRI data with the radio to optical synchrotron emission of the jet.
