The author presents basic techniques of helio- and asteroseismology, and discusses some of the results obtained so far. In the case of the Sun, the first measurements have been made of the sound speed and the equatorial rotation rate in the solar interior. In the stellar case, no definite observations of solar-like oscillations have so far been made, although there are several likely candidates. New observing techniques are developed, and we hope shortly to be able to test stellar evolution calculations with seismic techniques on stars other than the Sun.
